Question Introducing myself and a question

Good morning everyone!
I am an Italian and I work in the pharmaceutical sector. I would like to thank the administrators for this forum: this places are always an important source of information for those that are new to the country and because of this, that I decided to register here.
Here is my situation:
I came across a manager job position that looked interesting for me. After a month from the interview, I got an answer and they offered me a CDD contract of 6 months with the possibility either extend it for 18 months or converting it in to a CDI one. The salary is good but I am a little perplexed about the 6 month CDD, considering that I have to move from my home country to France, and this has some costs and logistic difficulties. My question is if this kind of proposal is standard or not?
Thank you very much for your help.

Whitepard

I think you need to also see it from the employer's side. CDI contracts are a bit like gold dust in France because French labour law is very protective of the employee and once a company has given a person a CDI, it's very very difficult and expensive for them to get rid of that person no matter how useless they turn out to be. So yes, it is normal for a company to protect itself by routinely taking on new employees on an initial CDD, before offering them a CDI.

Thank you EuroTrash for the answer.
I do understand the initial CDD, it is the 6 month period that it is setting me off. Where I worked so far, even with at CDI contract you have the first 3-4 month that are considered of probation, that means that both the employer and the employee can terminate the agreement anytime without repercussion. And so a CDD of 6 month is quite unusual for me. Considering that I need to move to France, I myself need to have some protection (and this come out of previous experiences).

Granted, it depends on the level of the job and other factors, but without any mention of relocation assistance, I'd be somewhat wary of such a job offer. It's not unheard of here for an employer to offer a CDD with the "possibility" of either prolonging the CDD or converting to a CDI, but when the time comes they "decide" to do neither and you're stuck having moved with no job when the CDD ends.

Proceed with caution here.
Cheers,
Bev

If you already have job which is similar to CDI, i think I would say you need pay attention. This is mainly because the company has the full control on the CDD. If the company decides to terminate, there is very little you can do. At the end it depends on how much risj you are willing to take for it
