Default Visa Application for Mother and 3 kids taking longer than normal?

I applied for a One Year Non Professional Tourist Visa for myself and my three children at the French consulate in Washington DC on June 23rd and supplied a few more requested documents to complete application on June 30th. I tracked envelope with those documents and it was received by consulate. It has now been over one month and we have not gotten passports returned. The consulate does not respond to emails or take calls. I don't have tracking number from our return envelope left with application and passports unfortunately. I'm starting to worry our application may have been lost, but I know no one can answer that for me. Has anyone else waited this long for similar visas? The children are registered in school in Saint Malo starting Sept 1st (if we are approved of course), and I'm thinking we won't be able to by plane tickets to be on time soon. is this fairly common? Looking for some peace of mind I guess.

July and August are real slow months for the consulates, given vacation schedules and all. It's most likely a matter of the office being short staffed. However, even if you arrive a few days or even a few weeks late, I'm sure the kids can slip into their spots in the schools with little or no problem.

One thing they are well aware of throughout France is that these administrative things take as long as they take, and if they are delayed, well, you show up late. (Hard thing to learn as a new expat - but it works out in the long run.)
Cheers,
Bev

Thanks, Bev! I hope that is the case. It's a relief to think things may be delayed instead of lost, and that this is sort of normal. We can use the extra time to prepare as well. Maybe they are short-staffed.
