Default Hiring contractors in France for construction

Hello,

I am building a house in haute savoie which is nearly finished save some work which I would like to contract out.

I would be grateful for advice for interviewing contractors, checking references, insurance (bonded).

Especially, on bidding jobs; for example I expect a tile job to take me about 2-3 days. Have you had success bidding jobs for a flat rate or is it best to go with what seems to be the more popular hourly rate and set a deadline?

My sincere thanks,

Brian

A French contractor needs to be registered and have a SIRET number They must also have decennale insurance that is an insurance that covers their work for 10 years.Normally French contractors work on giving a devis ie a written quote with a fixed sum which is legally binding once signed which covers all the work required.Rarely have I come across French builders working on an hourly rate. You would be advised to get 3 quotes. However roofing in particular has a long lead in time as most building work here in France does so do not be surprised if you have a long wait.As an aside you say you are building your own house if you sell you may be asked to show if you have the necessary insurance to cover your work or to sign a legal agreement covering any defects in construction
