Default Opening a company in Free-Zone

Hi everyone,

I had a small talk with one of the representatives of a consultancy firm in Dubai and I wanted to take your opinion on that matter too.

I've been having talks with a few apparel manufacturers in Hong Kong over the past few weeks, and I have decided on starting my own brand and importing clothes to the UAE and selling them online (Online store).

I was told that I will have to find a way to import the goods to the UAE (Either start a FZC or get someone who already has a company to get them in for me).

My question is the following:

Is it OK to start a FZC and import them myself (This will be a cheaper option) and then hire a 3rd party (Say ARAMEX/DHL) to deliver the items to the people, and have two methods of payment (One would be cash on delivery, and the other would be Paypal). Would this be considered legal? Would the courier service accept working for me if I have a FZC? Will i be able to take the items OUTSIDE the free zone and put them in a warehouse?

I would really appreciate anyone's help with this matter. I know that it is a grey area when it comes to the legality of a FZC Working onshore.

I am trying to cut cost as much as possible initially and that is why I am looking at the freezone and not LLC.

Thanks in advance

Kenan

hey kenan-- congrats on taking the bold step of starting your own company. certainly a daunting task by any standards, doubly so here in Dubai, an unfamiliar market, and one fraught with tons and tons and tons and tons of bureaucracy and red tape.

regarding the logistics/shipping/distribution/supply chain specific questions you asked, i could not give you an answer, however i do know that if you are setting up a company in a freezone, you can only sell in the freezone. if you're going to need a warehouse, i believe it too has to be in the free zone. whether selling online and distributing out of the freezone to customers is allowed-- i'm not sure. a gray area. the best thing to do would be to contact the freezone DIRECTLY not a third party consultancy. get a few answers and don't limit yourself only to dubai freezones-- if youre shipping stuff in, you're gonna need access to ports, sharjah, ajman, and RAK all have great options too (and cheaper).

good luck!
