Default Hysterectomy in Dubai

Hello fellow expats! I've been M.I.A for a while but thought I'd pop in to say hi and also share my recent experience.

As you may have guessed from the title of this thread, it's about a hysterectomy, mine to be exact. So if you're a guy reading this and feel uncomfortable with girl talk, feel free to close this thread now. Consider yourself warned.

I'm not going to get into the gory details of it but I've been battling with health issues for a few years now. The docs had recommended surgery last year but I somehow kept putting it off out of fear. But nature has a way of catching up to you and so a couple of months ago, I was told that a hysterectomy is the only way to resolve all my issues, that and the fact that my pre-cancer blood check had come back quite high. What followed was a lot of crying, not because I didn't want to divorce my uterus but more because I was afraid of the actual procedure due to previous complications.

I had 3 procedures done at once - adhesiolysis to remove previous adhesions of which there were a lot, cystectomy on both my ovaries to remove cysts but preserve the ovaries and then the hysterectomy to remove my uterus, cervix and fallopian tubes. My doctor advised me that it would be a challenging surgery but they would get it done. Apparently my internal organs were stuck together which was also adding to the pain.

Before my surgery, I was told that since it will be done laparoscopically, I will be walking the next day, discharged maybe in 2 days and will be fit to go back to work in 2 weeks.

What no one told me is that while you are made to walk the day after surgery to prevent blood clots, it is still flipping major surgery and your insides feel like they've been tossed around in a tornado.

I was discharged 3 days after surgery, came back home and a couple of days later, ended up right back in the hospital emergency room due to bleeding and a fever. My body was reacting to some infection, I had a pool of blood collected at the op site and so they re-admitted me back and put me on very strong antibiotics. Unfortunately for me, this second hospital round hit me harder than the actual surgery.

I had planned to only take 2 weeks off and then return after the Eid holidays making it a total of 3 weeks but here I am right now, sitting at home, almost 4 weeks after my surgery and feeling incredibly weak, slow and just generally very tired.

The reason I'm sharing this is because I noticed that there are no online support groups for women going through a similar experience as me in Dubai. A lot of the doctors downplay the seriousness of the surgery. So in case anyone visits this forum, looking for non-medical advice, tips and someone to share their experience with or are curious about what the recovery process might look like (again the non medical version), I am happy to help.

Hi Pamela0810,

Just wanted to say Hey! from the wild wild west of Calgary, Alberta, Canada... I haven't been on this site in ages, and I only come back once in awhile out of nostalgia as I am more or less resettled in my native land after my short stint in Dubai... and in fact, we never even really talked while I was in Dxb .

However, I just want to reach out and say I hear you... you went through a lot and I know that sometimes we just need to know that someone - anyone, is listening... so I didn't want to read your story, and then just move on without saying anything which is so often my MO.

Kudos to you for sharing your experience.

And fwiw you always struck me as an incredibly rational, intelligent, and very well-spoken woman... too bad we didn't get to meet when I was there.

I wish you all the best as well as a speedy and complete recovery.

Kind regards,

C.

Hey C,

Thank you so much for your message and kind words!

I hope that my post helps anyone who might be going through the procedure in the future. Wish there was more support available for stuff like this. It's often overlooked.

Calgary must be beautiful right now,bet you're missing our summer though
