Smile Alabama to Um Al Quwain

Hi all,

I am seeking guidance! I have been hired as a teacher in the Umm Al Quwain area and have no idea how to move and would like some more advice on what to expect. I have lots of books and teaching materials that i would like to take with me. This will be my first time traveling and living internationally! Please provide any blogs or reading material that you recommend as well.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Evanedu,

First off congrats! Now I suggest you join some UAE teacher facebook groups. I also suggest you leave many of your materials at home until you see the level of your students and become more culturally sensitive to the expectations here. I came as a teacher in 2010 as well and leaving my materials at home for the first year was grand. Reserve space in your luggage for things that will make you feel emotionally secure. Are you coming to a government school or private school? Your experience will differ based on this detail. Best advice I can give is be open and PATIENT lol

Whoa.

Umm al Quwain?

What school is up there? Do they even have a school? University or secondary or primary? Private or government?

UAQ is not Dubai but you're not far from Dubai on weekends either. There's a decent expat community in RAK next door and that's probably where most of your social life will be based. Al Hamrah, in particular.

Thank you! It is s a private school. I'm trying to figure out which materials are the most important for me to bring. Are there teaching stores there or will I have to buy everythinng online?

I can't speak to stores in UAQ but you're not far from Dubai and there are tons of teacher stores here.
