I'm not sure it would make much difference to be honest. I think the agencies just do the short listing & sifting etc but I could be wrong. Where are you up to with your visas & which have you applied for? If you apply direct to DHB they may not be interested until you could give them a time frame.....just a thought! I would apply for any jobs that catch your eye & see what happens or at the very least speak to recruitment!!!
My husband applied and got a job (not medical) before we left UK but we had got visas & booked flights for four months away. Sorry I can't be much help on that as I haven't applied for anything. I do think you would need to get your registration sorted first though, and make sure that any employer would be happy with no post reg experience. I would defo email nz nursing council & see what they say.
Ps. Think this will come up as escapedtonz profile as I'm on iPad & I think logged in as hubby ;-)))) x

Yes thank you. I've not formally started the visa app process etc, but have made most of the enquiries, also re registration with nz nursing council and ielts. However, its the initial money outlay to get the process started, you've been there already eh. also the confidence/fear factor as i would be moving on my own?!tho' i am quite well travelled. Yeah I've been qualified for many years, have 10yrs plus experience.
Much appreciate your prompt, informative replies! x

So, for those of you living in Wellington...How do you like it, in general?

Do you prefer Wellington to Auckland?

Personally I love it in Wellington. Settled very quickly and enjoying getting to know the lifestyle etc.
Don't really have any friends other than colleagues but just not had the time to socialise and we have a toddler.
There are people out there locally who I could see for a beer or coffee or golf but not found the time yet.
I have joined a golf club but its very different to the UK in that its never busy when I turn up.
Very busy training in the new job but at some point by Christmas I should be more settled at work and start to relax into the life here more and maybe get a social life :-)

Wellington has everything you could want. Yes it's compact but it's all there. We hoped to have pristine gorgeous beaches to sunbathe on within short drive 15 mins but must have missed researching that. There are a few but most just windswept and are good fir walking or surfing only. Theres a couple out there but good car ride to get to them.
Lots of walking routes, cycling routes especially for the MTB and other places to go for shopping instead of just going into the city - eg Lower Hutt City, Upper Hutt City, Porirua.
No problems with finding a GP or with health care. Have private health insurance with the job luckily which I suppose makes the process better anyway.
It's all sweet.

The wife doesn't love it but it's growing on her. Needs more convincing.

Whatever happens we are here to make a proper go of it, have another baby, both work here, buy a house, get citizenship after 5 years etc so we'll see what the future holds!!!

Default Moving to Wellington

My partner and I are moving to Wellington in about 3 weeks time so we are very excited! But we don't know many people in Wellington so we'd like to join some social events to get to meet you guys.

What are some social events that are coming up? Thanks!

Cool. Congrats. Where are you starting off ? Really is a great part of the world. Have some friends over at the moment and considering its still winter were having a great weekend in the dry sunny weather.
There are regular free events on the waterfront and social meets everywhere depending what your into. Majority of the stuff we do revolves around our toddler.
I joined a golf club straight away so if you're into that I can definitely introduce you to golf in Wellington surrounds and as long as you don't mind a crazy 18 month old loon 😄 we can show u nice places for shopping, coffee n lunch........not really been out after dark yet altho I'm told Wellington CBD is buzzing at night.
Good luck

Hey, that's a really quick reply! Thanks

Well, I will be working in Kilbirnie and living in Melrose, which I believe the two ares aren't too far from the CBD?

Ah cool! Well at the moment I'm hunting for a choir to join, zumba classes and perhaps yoga too! Do you know where I can do all those that arent too expensive? I've noticed that a lot of the classes cost a lot more than dunedin! Golf would be cool although I have never tried proper golf so I might need to start as a beginner!

Exciting! I don't mind toddler at all! In fact, I will actually be teaching infants and toddlers hehe :P

It would be cool to hang out! Are you on facebook?

Hi,
Yeah Kilbirnie & Melrose aren't far from each other or from the CBD - if your driving. They're in between the airport and Mt Victoria tunnel or there's an alternative route round the headland via Evans Bay and Oriental Bay to the CBD. Long way to walk. The headland route very nice with the bay all along in. See many a person walking, cycling or running it for fitness along the see wall.
Don't really know that much about the areas where you will be living or working though or anything about a choir, Zumba or yoga classes - sorry.
Think my Mrs mentioned where you could find Zumba in an earlier post?
There's every kind of club and social group you can think of in the city so I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
You'll find everything in Wellington is more expensive - food, drink etc whether paying for it in a pub bar restaurant or supermarket. It's the city weighting thing and it is the capital so it's expected. Shocks me every time I have a bottle beer in the CBD and it's $12......Ouch!!! Usually $30 for 24 bottles in the supermarket here.

You might need to take a few lessons on the golf front first - the club where I'm a member isn't for the faint hearted ha ha. Definitely made the game harder for me & I've been playing since I was a wee boy.

Cool so you'll be a teacher. Our little whirlwind defo break you in :-)
Yeah on Facebook - try send you a PM

It can be really difficult to make new friends in a new city - so how about having a virtual cup of coffee and maybe arranging a social do?
