Default Work visa entry expiring soon. Will a new visa be required?

My brother was granted a work visa in April, but before he could leave for NZ the borders were closed. The last date for entry is June 12th, and obviously he will not be able to enter the country by then.

Can anyone please advise on whether they have any information about whether he will need to apply for a new visa after June 12th? We are hoping that they will reissue a new visa after opening the borders, but they may just ask him to go through the whole process again. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

All visa expiry dates have been extended for 6 months as far as I know but he needs to check with his Immigration case officer asap. Not his fault that Covid-19 happened and he was unable to travel. Looks unlikely the borders will reopen for quite a while yet - maybe 12 to 18 months. The only people being allowed in are citizens, permanent residents and holders of resident visas with valid travel conditions. Some others are being allowed in if associated with essential services or on compassionate grounds if travelling for family reasons but these have to go through a specific discretionary application procedure and be approved for travel. As far as I know all temporary work visa holders cannot travel and unlikely he'd even be allowed to board a flight.
Shouldn't have to redo the process again. That isn't fair. Immigration should extent the expiry date until he can travel here but the visa will have been approved on the basis of a job offer and if that is taken away or changes then he may not be remain eligible for the visa anymore whether he can travel or not.
There is talk of opening up a Trans-Tasman travel bubble with Australia but they're still having new cases so not likely yet. Gonna be a long time till others from overseas can come here.
Is the company offering the job gonna keep it open ? That's the worst risk for him in all honesty as if that is taken away then so does the visa.

Thanks so much for the information. So far they have kept him on as a remote worker, and hopefully that will continue. It would have been bad if they hadn't done that because he had already left his previous job in anticipation of leaving for NZ.

He had written an email to immigration asking about what should be done but no response from them as yet.
