Default Moving to the North London-Cambridge area, advice on location and schools?

Hello,
we are an American/Italian family (that is husband only US citizen, wife and children dual) moving back to Europe.
My husband work will be between Harlow and Ware and we are trying to assess where to live.
I will be starting my own consulting business and I am not sure this will have any impact on location. The children on the other hand will start school in 2012 and we want to find an area with excellent schools.
We looked at
1) Waltham Abbey/Crossing area (schools don't seem impressive) anyone with advice there? I like that is closer to London
2) Bishops Stofford which has good schools and good travel connections but it is less residential (unless we are missing the best areas)
3) Hertford seems nice but very small
4) St Albans seems gorgeous but far

Now, does anyone here live in these areas and has good advice? we would be renting for a while but ultimately buying, is it true that prices are up b/c of the 2012 Olympics and are deemed to crash?

Thanks a lot and looking forward to meet other expats once in the UK!
Giulia

I lived in Luton and Toddington, but many years ago, and I know that then and now many people commute to London.

However this may help you with your decision,

This website should give you some helpful information on neighborhoods:

UK house prices, property, crime, local neighbourhood & schools | UpMyStreet

You might want to check out Sawbridgeworth which is the next town over from Bishop Stofford. It has good schools and a cute little village and quite residential.

Property prices in London and surrounding areas have been strong for a decade and have wavered little in the economic downturn of the past couple of years. I wouldn't hold my breath that they will come down after the Olympics,
