Red face Are you kidding me!

Hello to one and all.....

I have been in the process of moving to the UK for the past year. I am a nurse in the states and make 45-50K per year. I have been offered three nursing positions in the UK and have turned down all three. Due to the hospital's (NHS) pay structure. They have all been offering to start me at 19,600K {pounds} per year. I was shocked and dissappointed. I am not trying to live in London. Maybe in oxford or another area. I am looking for honest feedback on the cost of living in the UK. I just do not see how anyone (with a small child who will need childcare) can live off of such a small salary.

Under a national health care system, like the NHS, medical personnel do not receive the same salaries they do in the US. You'd probably be equally shocked and disappointed to see what doctors on the NHS are paid in comparison to what they could be making in the US. The responsibilities are also somewhat different for a nurse, depending on your specialty and training.

One big factor in living abroad is that you spend your money on a very different set of goods and services. For instance, health insurance - compare the standard NHS "contribution" with what a person pays in the US for similar coverage. Or take a look at whatever pension scheme you would fall under vs. comparable contributions you should be making in the US under a 401K or similar program. Child care may be another difference - depending on the age of your child, there may be public facilities available that would cost in the US.
Cheers,
Bev

You would be shocked but to me 19,600 as a starting wage sounds about the going rate. Sadly nurses in the UK are paid a pittance and expected to slave for it, as are all public service staff (Doctors, Teachers, Policemen)

People do live off salaries like this but it is a real struggle. I doubt that you would be able to afford to live in Oxford on that money as it is an expensive area. You would have to rent as there are few places where you could afford a mortgage on that kind of money. You might be lucky and be able to get help with childcare costs.

According to the papers recently, a young single person needs to earn more than 13,400 a year to live a reasonable life, as long as they live in local authority housing - forget about privately rented accommodation.

Thank you Bev for your response! I was aware that the whole public healthcare system was set up in the same fasion, and that the average pay was less then expected for all. My concern is that if rent in the states is $800/month and rent in the UK is 800pounds/month. There is no way I would be able to support myself and my daughter on such a low salary ( without visiting the soup line at lest twice a week!)..........still smiling!!!
