Default Customs duties VAT Duties payable on old household items

Hi all,

I've been scouring the internet for answers, including this forum, and have spoken to Customs a few times but have not found any answers to my particular question.

Basically I anticipate moving to Scotland in the coming months. I'm an Australian but live in the EU and have done so for the past 3 years. Unfortunately, when I left Australia many years ago I left a lot of stuff there because I could not commit to taking it all at that time. But now I am looking to move it. What I have is about 3 large boxes, and about 6 archive boxes worth of of old clothes, used cds, used shoes, some used books and small decorative sentimental items.

I understand from talking to Customs that I am not entitled to any relief from paying VAT or import taxes because: 1) I have lived within the EC for a while now; and 2), the 24 month grace period for moving personal effects, has finished.

What I am trying to find out is the best way to get my things to the UK, and how much I would be likely to pay for such items. How on earth can the value of used things be calculated? I would guess my things are virtually worthless, how much do used books cost? Or shoes? I asked Customs who referred me to a code system. Will Customs literally go through item by item and calculate this?

Has anyone been in this predicament or had anything similar happen? I'm grateful for any insights.

Also, do you think the taxes etc would be lower in the Netherlands? I could import there first if it's cheaper.
