Default My Move To London

I'm posting this in case it is interesting to anyone else.

I applied for my fiancé visa online at 18 Feb; it arrived in Sheffield on 26 Feb and I received the visa on 4 March. We had no problems at all with the visa; we knew we were well qualified and just had to demonstrate it to the ECO.

With visa in hand, we began to set up the move. My FI came to the USA to help with the actual move and we ended up needing every hour we had together. We had several last minute trips to FedEx and the post office, sending things to England that we didn't want shipped. I ended up FedExing my wedding gown to England ($700) as well as tons of books. We shipped most of my furniture and it is expected to arrive in a month or two (we used Allied International). We got rid of lots of stuff, and we packed all of my clothes and shoes and handbags in my luggage to transport to England (we had to pay for an extra bag on BA).

On 26 April, I sent my cat to England via AirPets. That was the most difficult step, but it went off beautifully. It was just very emotional, worrying about her. She was fine, however.

We departed the USA yesterday and arrived today in London. Entering with the visa was a piece of cake. On the landing card, I wrote for length of stay "indefinite" and then in parenthesis "fiancé visa". I put the landing card on the visa page but when I arrived, my fiancé blurted out, "I'm British, she's my fiancé." The IO smiled at his eagerness and swiped our passports. She had me put my thumb and index finger on the scanner and that was fine. There was another IO standing behind the IO who was dealing with us, and she asked our wedding date. We said it in unison. This made me think that possibly when they swiped my passport the fundamental details of my application might have popped up on the screen. If we'd given a different answer, it would have flagged us as being frauds. I have no idea if this is true, but it seemed possible.

They were both very friendly and wished us well. We breezed through the border.

It's been a busy, crazy, exhausting day but so worth it. I'd say the biggest surprise was just how much there is to do when you move across the world. For instance, to move your stuff to the UK from the USA you have to get an Employer Identification Number from the Social Security Administration. It was easy, but just one small detail you have to pay attention to. There are many of these details that have to be managed for months or weeks leading up to the move.

I'm just glad it is over now, and I'm here in London, and life is sweet.

Welcome to London!

Border Force at Heathrow are absolutely fabulous. They only asked me a few questions when I arrived last Columbus Day... they asked Ed more questions than they did me (and got his name wrong) before letting us go through

You've picked a good time to show up... the weather has finally cleaned up its act and is acting appropriately for the time of year we're in.

Monday is May Day and as such a Bank Holiday, most (but not all) of the country will be on a long weekend.

Even if I were stupid enough to reveal personal details on this forum, I wouldn't reveal them to you. You're a spammer.
