Hello, everyone.

I am finishing up my application online for citizenship and have come to the part of Good Character. I do not have a criminal history of any kind, nor do I have any associations with terrorism or anything even remotely close to it. I have never filed bankruptcy and I pay my bills every month. However, I did get a speeding ticket once when I was younger, although I truly can't remember the details (must be over 20 years ago now). Do I need to list a speeding ticket from the US, even though it was minor and I think I even challenged it and it was dismissed (no points were taken off my license)? I can't remember the exact date, so what do I do? If I don't list it at all, does that mean I am of bad character for not mentioning it? In the US, if your case is dismissed, it cannot be held against you for anything (you are not found guilty of anything).

I was reading in another part of this forum last year that someone had a dismissed charge (he was falsely charged for something that he never did and then court dismissed his case entirely because they agreed he was falsely charged) and he decided not put that on his citizenship application and it was approved. Would this be the same for dismissed traffic tickets? Or was he just taking a risk to not mention his dismissed case?

I have been reading about this subject everywhere I can and I just want to do the right thing. I am fairly certain they are trying to weed out terrorists and people involved in crime -- not going after folks with silly dismissed traffic tickets. But I also don't want anyone to think I am trying to hide something. I am not -- I just don't understand if it is significant enough to mention.

What should I do?

Personally, I would not mention a speeding ticket - especially one from 20 years ago.

Well, I have paid online and set my appointment now. I have done my very best with the application, so I hope I have done it all correctly.

I have been given a list of documents. Does it appear to you I have included everything I need? Thanks again for your help, it is greatly appreciated. xx


1. Passport issued by the United States of America - OK

2. Proof of Living in the UK
What do I include here? Just my passport that shows I have been here for 5 years?

3. Marriage Certificate - OK

4. Proof of freedom from immigration time restrictions
This is my BRP?

5. The United States of America passport, ID card or letter to prove English level
Just my passport again?

6. Two referee declarations
During the application process, I could download 1 file for 1st Referee and 1 file for 2nd referee. They appear to be
the same file. After paying, you can download 1 file that says it is for the 1st Referee and no option to download for
the 2nd Referee. I am assuming this is OK, as they do look identical? Do these need to be notorized?

7. One proof of British citizenship for spouse
My husband's passport, all pages

8. Current Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
Just my BRP again?

You need to prove you were physically present in the UK exactly 3 years before the date of application. Don't count on your passport being accepted as proof of residence. Most people provide P60s over the 5 years which show they were working for a UK employer, letter a from their employer, some proof of continuous residence like annual council tax statements.

No, of course referee statements don't need to be notarised, they are personal statements. It's fine to use the same referee declaration for both

Your BRP shows you are free from time restrictions. Yes, your passport and BRP will be proof for multiple sections here

Thank you so very much, Clever Octopus.

As I am at the office on my lunch break, I have been able to get my employer to write up a letter to state I have been working for them consecutively for 3 years. I assume my Council Tax bills for the 2 years prior to this should prove I was here before I began working?

I can not state enough how valuable this forum has been to me over the years. It's little things (like this employer letter) that I would have missed if not for the help of others in here. Thanks again. xx
