Default How to get a tax number.

I have pre settled status and need to supply my home country with a UK tax number before my pension can be paid to me.

My family says I will need to get a National Insurance Number and use this. I have no wish to work or ask for any housing or monetary assistance ever.

Is there a way to get a tax number without applying for a NI first?

I don't know about other people's experiences, but my wife got her NI number easily. She called the NI contact number and asked for one. They asked why she wanted one and she said, she was hoping to find work. That's it. They then, send a letter to your home address with your NI number.

I thought it works like that Keith as the Gov website says it will be sent to you. The Job Centre in Cirencester said I have to make an appointment at the nearest Job Centre Plus which is in Bristol. I have to take all my documentation with for the interview to check if I qualify for an NI number.

If I only want to pay tax, why would I have to pass scrutiny to be able to do so? This is frustrating as I have no car yet and there is no public transport to Bristol.

I don't think it's that unusual now that people coming to the country & requiring an NI number are expected to attend an interview at a job centre plus. My husband had to have an interview at Bristol job centre plus when he needed an NI number.
If your local job centre have told you this is the process you need to go through.. no one can really dispute that.

My wife's experience was similar to keithryan, she called the DWP, and said she needed to declare income from property we own (she is retired) and needed to fill in a tax return, so they sent her a form, which she completed and returned with copies of her passport and visa. Then about 3 weeks later she got a letter from DWP with her NI number. No interview or anything.

Thanks for the feedback. When I contact the JobCentre they want me to go for an interview with hordes of supporting docs.

If the DWP will give me an NI number then it would suit me better. Do you have a contact number?

The contact number was 0845 60006 for the "Department of Works and Pensions Contact Centre"

This was about 3 years ago so hopefully its still valid. They sent her form CA5400, again don't know if this is still current.

Cheers

Identity interviews are much more common for EU nationals, they may still insist on an interview
