Default Scanning vs sending document - Experience at Berlin. Will I get documents back?

Hi all,

I could not find much material on submitting spouse visa applications from Germany. So I am detailing my experience here in case it will be helpful for others.

The bigger TLS contact visa processing centre is in Dusseldorf. I opted for the appointment in Berlin as it was nearer. I thought they would be scanning the documents there as I read on the website. Apparently that is only available in Dusseldorf. If you want digital scanning, go to Dusseldorf and not Berlin!

Upon reaching the centre, they asked me to fill up a passport return form with address. Afterwards the gentleman asked me to go up and wait to see the lady there. There was only one lady processing applications in the whole office.

I was a bit thrown aback by the fact THEY would be sending my documents. Because I thought they would be scanning the original documents i had photocopied all the passports and non a4 sized documents. In the end, they sent the whole pile including photocopied documents and my original passports, residence card etc, which were in a separate ziplock bag. I hope the doubling of original and photocopies in that one pile is not an issue when it gets to the ECO!

After that, they did the biometric processing including speaking into the camera and fingerprinting.

Oh and the lady also asked me to organise that one pile of documents into two sets - things that I want sent back and things I don't want sent back. Then I said that i have arranged it in a specific order and I don't want it to go out of order. After that she said she would ask the whoie pile to be sent back. She wrote a note indicating as such in front of the documents.

I had one query though. I read elsewhere that in order to go the original documents back, I have to send a copy of the whole pile. However, they only took and sent the original pile and not the photocopy. They said the original documents will be sent back to me. Is this true? I have read of cases where they have kept documents because a photocopy was not sent. Should I send a secondary pile of photocopied documents to Sheffield myself or will that confuse the ECO given that the originals are being sent by someone else and the copies by me?

Thanks for all your help everyone in the process of getting the application done, particularly Londoner and others who have so generously given your time.

They scan all of the original documents into their system in Sheffield anyway. There is no need to even send them photocopies.

Wow i had no clue! I kept reading in these forums about needing to send them photocopies. So was that old advice which is no longer relevant? So nowadays you are only expected to send one set of original documents and they will certainly send them back? Like my original marriage certificate and such...
