Default Help! How much documentation for 6 month tourist visa?

Hi Everyone,

I've been browsing this forum for a few weeks and it's a wealth of info so I'm hoping someone can help / reassure me with a question about the 6 month tourist visa.

I'm originally from the US, but currently live in Australia (I have dual citizenship). My boyfriend lives in the UK and after visiting him for three weeks over Christmas the plan is that I will move over there in February, initially on a 6 month tourist visa, then return to the states to apply for my fiancé Visa before going back to the UK to get married.

My question is: how much documentation do I need to show immigration when I enter the UK to ensure I'm granted the 6 month Visa? Both my partner and I have very good jobs and we have documents and payslips to prove that we can support me for the full 6 months. I've also purchased 6 months worth of travel insurance so I have that certificate. Lastly, I have a return ticket booked to the states just prior to what would be 6 months. Is that enough documentation for them to grant me the full 6 month visa or do I need more evidence?

Thanks!

They may ask how come you can leave your job for 6 months? Is your boss giving you unpaid leave? If so, do you have a letter to prove?

Other than that, you can't do any more but as you know, granting 6 months leave is at the discretion of the immigration officer. They can't deny entry without clear reasons, but if they aren't 100% satisfied, they can give you restricted leave, endorse your passport and put details on their database.

And if asked about your relationship, it's best to be honest and state clearly that you are only visiting your boyfriend this time but you are returning to US to apply for fiancée visa. I think the letter from your employer is the most important document, and if you have already left your job, your return flight and your intention to apply for fiancée visa back home.

Don't lie if they ask you direct questions: Are you in a relationship? Do you intend to get married? Acknowledge and state you are fully aware of the rules and after your visit you are returning home to apply for relevant settlement visa. They may ask how you are going to spend 6 months in UK, so have an answer ready.

Thanks for your help Joppa. That all makes perfect sense. I'll definitely be honest about my relationship and my circumstance.
