Smile Information on Salary in Melbourne, VIC

Dear generous Expats,

I have got a job offer and soon be relocating to Melbourne once the 457 Visa process is through. I have been following many posts and links but nothing gives complete clarity on the query which is more specific to me. So, I hope I will get some answers here.

I would like to know if the salary offered would be good enough to start off in a city like Melbourne?

The offer is as below:
Basic: A$ 97,000
On-Call Allowance: A$ 10,000
Annual Incentive: A$ 25,000
Annual Car Allowance: A$ 17,000
Plus Fuel Card
Plus Superannuation: 9.5%

I will be moving in with my wife and 2 year old daughter.

Do you think this would be a good salary to start my career in Australia?
I have never lived in any other country other than my home country and I hope that the information and help I gather from this forum would help me to build my career and live a healthy and good life, securing my family's future.

Hoping for some help on this!

Yes mate this should work.
Note you will not get Medicare on 457
No child care Benifit
Your partner can do any job she wants but with a small kid that would be difficult unless u arrange something

Thank you dpkmax for your reply,

One thing I have not mentioned is the organization will also cover for health, as it is mentioned in the offer as "Health Insurance Benefit (Family Rate)". Though I am not very sure how much they are going to take care out of that, but certainly it would help me a bit till the time my wife starts working!

I believe the day care costs are quite high, any inputs on the same?

For Sydney I would say rent might struggle you but for Melbourne you can definitely get 2 bedroom apartment for around $450/w (23.5k per annum)
So your base salary after tax would be 66k. So after the rent you will have $42.5k which is plenty enough to survive; especially if you won't pay anything for your car and health insurance.

Thank you very much spark92!!

That was very helpful indeed. I was doing some research on realestate.com.au and could find some suburb with decent ammenities and rent within A$400/week. I think I need to do more research on the housing as, I need to save more on rent which constitutes the maximum component of the expenses there.

Correct me if wrong!!
Thanks again for your help and reply!!

Thanks tankit for your post and query!

I am actually very lucky to have got the offer from the same company where I am currently working in India, for their Australian operations. Though I had to pursue a lot, and had many interviews before they selected me (took 6+ months to complete the recruitment process), I also visited Melbourne in June and worked with them for 4 days to have them convince regarding my candidature. But once everything got through, they are only helping me with everything.
Including the Visa process as well as relocation!

Before this, I was trying to find organizations which would sponsor me for the job in Australia and after looking for the same for almost 2 years, now I have landed up with this job!

Currently there are some migration lawyers/agents from "Fragomen Global" who are helping with the Visa process.

I hope I could be of some help!

Don't go for any cheaper.

Essentially cheaper you go, more chance for you to get diseases, non family friendly, bogan area etc. (Trust me I've changed 10 places since I have arrived in Australia, from bedbugs to many other issues that I've had)

An average Australian spends around 30-50% of his/her salary on housing. So don't feel it's too much.
