Smile Thinking of emigrating

I found a lot of threads very useful as my husband & I are thinking of emigrating. We have two children (12 & 6). I am worried about house prices and if they have gone out of our reach to have a comfortable house in Australia. We would (after selling our present house) have a good downpayment but as we would hopefully move near Perth, I don't know what the house prices are like. I have been looking at the real estate websites and they vary wildly. I was wondering if anybody could give me some pointers. We would like to be within commuting distance of our prospective jobs. Both of our professions are listed on the wanted skills listing, so I am hopeful of obtaining employment if we do go. I would, if possible, like to move before the beginning of the school year which I believe is February 2012. Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Default Perth House prices

Hi Iskey,

As you've probably seen, house prices in some Perth suburbs are very expensive compared to most of the UK. We are currently renting north of Perth, and have been doing loads of research on house prices near us. If you want to live close to the city and/or or within walking distance of the beach (certainly in the north) you'll probably need to pay at least $600,000 for a house, rising to well over $1m. However there are still a couple of nice suburbs north of Perth where you can buy a 3/4 bed house for around $450/500. Have you had a look at Joondalup, Currambine or Kinross? All are about 20km north of the CBD and only a couple of km inland from the beach. If you have a look at a map of Perth, the most expensive suburbs stretch along the coast, becoming less expensive as you cross over Marmion Avenue, and then less expensive again as you cross the Mitchell Freeway.

And yes, in WA the new school year starts in Feb 2012, although when we arrived in March we were able to start school school the following week, and several other families have joined the school since then. There are new people arriving in Perth all the time, so try not to worry too much about being there for the start of the new year (although I did spend a lot of time worrying about that too )

Good luck!
