Default Any Canadians here? Declaring non-residency...

Hi all,

Question for any Canucks on the forum. Basically, I've been living in Australia for 3.5 years. Am a permanent resident. Canadian citizen (born and raised), and never really declared myself a non resident of Canada since I left. The last Canadian tax return I filed was in 2009, and for the life of me, I can't remember if I ticked the "I am not filing a tax return" box or not.

Has anyone gone through this? Do I even need to worry about declaring non-residency in Canada? I know Australia/Canada has a tax treaty, but trying to read it makes me dizzy . I've filed Australian tax returns for the last 3 years, and have paid full tax over here on everything. The only thing I have in Canada is a bank account which earns 0 interest, and an RRSP that has $250 in it. I never cancelled my driver's license or medical plans, but they expired a long time ago, and I never renewed them. I have a fully Australian license, and have had for 3 years now. I own no property in Canada, nor do I have any income.

I appreciate any help. I'm heading back to Canada for xmas this year, and don't want to be thrown into jail when I go through customs for tax evasion or anything!!
