Default Moving to Sunny Brisbane

Hi all
What a great thread!
I've been working in Singapore for the past 5 years. I've enjoyed it but now it's come to the stage where I want to either move to Brisbane, or move back home to Christchurch (NZ-where I'm from. I do miss it there but teaching jobs are hard to find).
I'm an ESL teacher with lots of experience and have been applying for jobs in Brisbane.
Since living in Singapore, I'm more used to living in apartments/condos. I'm also keen to live in an apartment in Brisbane. Reading the thread, I see that a lot of people live in houses. I'd be scared stiff due to spiders, snakes etc. Anyone here live in apartments in Brisbane? Particularly around the CBD area?
How's Brisbane been treating you?

Hello there,

Welcome to the forum.

The teaching profession in Australia is crying out for teachers so I don't think you'll have much of a problem getting a job.

Spiders are around but you don't see them everyday in your house. We've been in our rental for 9 months now and have had one huntsman the size of my fingernail (thank goodness!!) and some daddy longleg spiders. I leave the daddy longleg spiders alone because they're supposed to keep the huntsmens away. But, if you are originally from NZ then you'll be used to the bigger spiders. Never come across a snake yet so can't help you on that one

Hopefully someone from the Brisbane area will be able to help with your queries.

Dolly

Default Brisbane bound?

Thanks for the quick response, Dolly! I've heard of your encounters on the threads here and you're much braver than me! Actually, I've never seen big spiders in Christchurch, so am psyching myself up for the move to Brisbane!
Here's hoping people out there have some info on apartment living..my eyes are getting pretty tired from all this research!!

Hi there Nzboyn, I came back from a 3 year stint in the UK 18 months ago and the main criteria for a property was to be in the thick of things as we were living in the East End of London and just loved the buzz of life there. We settled on a suburb called New Farm, we can walk into the city centre in 15 minutes, we live above restaurants and bars and there is a 24 hour convenience store just up the road, we love the place. The other area we were also checking out was West End, that has the same feel to it. Good luck, Kevin

Thanks Kevin for the info. Much appreciated.

I've also been checking out New Farm and West End. Kangaroo Point seems another good spot but am keeping my options open!

Some of the apartments I looked at (I came over for a quick scout in April) were converted from old woolstores. They seemed alright but the walls seemed quite thin and so I'm hoping for something "newer".

Do you think you'll settle down here long-term?
