It's now 4 years. But you also have to take into account any overseas trips you have in those 4 years and add it to the date you arrived.

People who became permanent residents on or after 1 July 2007 must have been lawfully resident in Australia for four years immediately before applying including:

* 12 months as a permanent resident
and
* absences from Australia of no more than 12 months, including no more than ninety (90) days in the 12 months before applying.

the link below has all the info u need
Step 1: Am I eligible? – Other situations

cheers

Hi
I spoke to immigration about this yesterday, you have to legally live in Australia for 4 years prior, then be PR for one year before applying. In other words, if you have just moved here you have to live here for 4 years, if you have been on a temporary visa for three years (or more) then been granted PR, its a year from the date you where granted PR, providing you havn't been out of the country for 90 days. Hope this makes sense.

Just to clarify that but about July 1st 2007 - if your visa was granted before then and you have entered the country to validate (or move here) before 1st July then it's still 2 years.

I had to call them about that since we moved out here in July 19th 2007 but had already validated our visa

I'm checking out when and where we will apply for the test and then where we'll have the ceremony since we have local friends who want to attend.

Regards,
Karen

No worries. It's certainly not obvious from the site which is why I rang them.
