Default Irish electrician moving to melbourne, good idea?

Hi, this is my first post here, Ive seen some great info so far so hopefully some of guys can help me out.

Like I say im 25 from dublin, a sparkie with no ties, a few bob saved and Ive got residency and nearly have my 'A' class licence to work as an elecrician over there.

Im unemployed in ireland at the minute so Im really thinking of heading over in the next week or two to Melbourne on my own. I have been to australia before as a backpacker but never melbourne.

Whats the city like wheather wise this time of year, should I hold out until maybe aug/sept until it picks up and where are the best places to live and find Irish communities to socialise with?

It would be great to hear from anyone in a similar situation.
thanks

Hi PaulG
If you have permanent residence you should not have a problem finding work. Just remember it rains a lot at this time in M/bourne
Good luck

Hi Paul

Like you we also plan to move to Melbourne. My husband is a brickkie and it seems that there is still work there for trades. I don't think there is an Irish community as such in Melbourne but I could be wrong. You do get a Winter in Melbourne and some rain too, but nothing on the level of Ireland!

Good places to meet other like minded Irish are the usual Irish pubs of which there are a few...

yea its as if melbourne is doing alright workwise on the construction side of things. To be honest Im going for the police or firebrigade when i get there, the sparking is just to tie me over until such time. There's alot to be said for job security these days

Hiya, i'm not sure what the irish community is like in melb. but you are bound to meet irish people or other ex pats at bars & clubs. Its pretty bad in ireland at the moment work wise so just see it as an adventure................ You just never know, it could be the best move you've ever made.

I have an irish friend moving back to melb in the next month or 2 so I could hook u both up or get more info on whats what if you want!!! He is also a sparky...........
