The city of Manila, or lungsod ng Maynila, is the cosmopolitan capital of the Philippines, and one of the cities and municipality that comprises the Metropolitan Manila area. It lies on the western coast of the island of Luzon, at the confluence of the Pasig River and the Manila Bay where it is surrounded by fertile plains. The city is surrounded by the cities of Quezon and Caloocan to the north, San Juan and Mandaluyong to the east, Pasay and Makati to the south, and the Manila Bay in the west.
