Friends and family visiting expats in Europe this summer are set to pay more to fill up their car tanks with unleaded fuel in Spain and France and less in Andorra and Luxembourg, according to new research. The performance of sterling means that those travelling to visit expats will pay nine pence more a litre for unleaded petrol in Spain and seven pence more in France than they would have a year ago.
While diesel drivers will pay up to 31 pence a litre less than for unleaded fuel, according to the seventh annual motoring in Europe report from the Post Office. It says that sterling’s fall in value against European currencies is responsible for the fuel price rises, rather than local pump price rises. The report revealed that the cost of unleaded petrol had fallen in over half of the 18 countries it surveyed, while diesel was cheaper in over 80%. However, once the sterling exchange rate was factored in, drivers face forking out up to £19 extra for every 1,000 miles of unleaded motoring, and up to £11 more to drive 1,000 miles in a diesel car.
