Hardly anybody wants to teach kids. That's where the jobs are, though. I think the only way is to just show up. It helps to have a tefl certificate, and to be legal (although legal jobs are hard to find), you need a university degree.
Unlike other countries, Thai schools don't post much on bulletin boards or advertise on Dave's ESL Cafe. They find their teachers among those who want to live there and are right in front of them. Chiang Mai is supposed to be one of the hardest places to find work, and supposedly has the lowest pay, too. Amazingly, if you have a degree and a TEFL certificate, the public schools pay fairly well. You have to be prepared for large classes, and even in the private language schools, no airconditioning, at least in Chiang Mai. That may not seem like an issue if you've mainly been there in the winter tourist season, but when it is well over 40C, you might care more. |

No air=con in private schools in Thailand , my god , no wonder some expats suggest they have slipped below 3rd world status , they have air-con in private schools here in ultra poor Cambodia and they pay a livable stipend .

Some of the private schools have air-con, but many do not. The Thai's don't mind. It may be different in Bangkok, but it certainly was true in Chiang Mai. Then the students complain because the foreign teachers sweat.
