It's an incredible story, isn't it? When I first heard about it I presumed it was something that had happened around the time of the civil war, but no, the shocking thing is that it went on right up to the 1990's, as this quote says
Quote:
It is well documented that babies were taken from women who had supported the defeated Republican side after Spain's 1936-39 civil war. However, some of the baby trafficking cases are as recent as the mid-1990s.

The thing that really broke my heart was hearing on the news the other day that three families had recently cracked open the tombs of their babies...

Only one of the three had remains inside.

I assumed the same at first - but so recently

and potentially so many

Investigating magistrate Baltasar Garzon has calculated there could have been 30,000 baby thefts in Spain in the wake of the civil war.

This is unbelievably and so shocking. You really feel for those poor families. I am a firm opponent of capital punishment but sometimes you think...

Good grief, can you imagine?

That means from one moment to the next your whole life has changed. Your son/ daughter is probably out there somewhere having been brought up by who knows who, who knows where, and the grieving you went through has to be put into reverse action.

This is very, very cruel.
