We're just about to go through buying a car, and so far it seems horrendously complicated. Second hand cars are more expensive than the UK, plus there can be embargoes on them (debts that you may unwittingly buy with the car)??? and from what I can see, we may well need to get a jestor involved as the paperwork appears to be mind blowing - with ITVs, transferal costs, no apparent government standards???!!! - If I'm wrong and its failrly simple, could someone let me know AAAGGGHH!!!! We're seriously thinking of keeping our rental car long term as thats only costing 300 euros a month inc.!

Jo

I bought my car and it was very simple. The seller (a garage) paid the fees, so we didn't have to worry about that. I believe it cost him €150 to do the transfer.

If you're buying privately then I'd suggest using a gestor as they check to see any outstanding debts aren't there.

Tax depends on what size your car is. We have a 2 litre 4 x 4 and thats just over the €100 a year. Smaller cars can go down to only €40 from what I heard. We paid €550 for the first years insurance, using our UK NCB. That includes full european breakdown cover

I second Stravinksys experience, we bought 2nd hand from a dealer and they did it all, no issues at all. If buying privately then use a Gestor (paralegal/admin advisor... nothing really compares in the UK, almost like a lawyer but not qualified) and they'll do all the checks for you, and you pay them a nominal fee.

ITV (MOT equivilant) - you can pay a garage to take your vehicle for you, we paid a garage to take our car, but hubby took his scooter himself and found it easy (basic knowledge of spanish needed).

Insurance.... we use Abbeygate, found them to be the cheapest.
