Hi Loobyloo,
You don't tell us much, so here's a blunderbuss answer.

"Contract" meaning short term contract - but working for someone.
"Contract" meaning "Autonomo" working under contract for someone.

Either one of those equates to an Alta en Seguridad Social and thus, you should have your "Targeta Sanitaria" - Secial Security Card.

If you don't, then the process has gone very wrong. Did you get a payslip when on this contract? This would show the contributions made by the employer.
Did you get your "finiquito" (a bit like a P45 in England) when your contract finished?

You already state "without health insurance" - why? Has your Paro (if you had any entitlement to it) finish. I know that after working only a year you only get a few months Paro in an y case. Normally, health cover via employment goes on fully for 3 months post end of Paro benefits. When in the paro you are still contributing, only it's the INEM and not the employer that contributes.

If all else fails, and you're on your own, the good news is that One person can get private medical cover VERY cheaply in Spain. If you can't afford that (and that is meant that you can show VERY limited monthly earnings(you could see about getting cover under the "sin recursos" method but this would mean showing your last IRPF return, your "baja de trabajo" and "alta en INEM" etc. Not really for those working under less than legit conditions.

Sorry I can't be more specific but as I say, lots of info missing for an accurate answer.

Hope this clears a few doubts in any case.

Xose

OK, obviously by leaving yourself that makes things clearer so far as INEM is concerned. You don't say if you have a medical card though. After a year of working for someone, you should have one by now. I'm not sure if the cover goes on past leaving employment yourself. This is one thing that INEM could tell you as a matter of fact.

Sorry, don't know much about simple care other than they seem a bit like a private health care "discount club". The "discount" relevence will depend on the charges of their "Cuadro Medico" I guess. Perhaps someone who uses them on here can reply.

Good luck,
Xose

INEM is the unemployment office where you are "dado de Baja" when you start work and "dado de alta" when unemployed. Having left work yourself, you can now be registered (should be really) in the INEM but you will be under "Demandante de empleo" as opposed to "en Paro". That's beause you are now unemployed without unemployment benefit. Even so, you will still be "dado de alta" in the INEM and this is fairly important for possible future red tape processes - including the afore mentioned claim of not having resources and so the continued cover from SS is requested on that basis. The admin at your centro de salud will be able to explain more should that time ever arrive.

The card you mention sounds like the Tarjeta Sanitaria. With your name and number on it plus the expiry date. The test of cover valid or not would be if you went to the doctor with a minor ailment, they swipe it and you get a prescription - if they say it's no longer active, you'll have to pay 100% of the medicine they prescribe. If not, then 40%... and cover is still being met. You really want to find this out before using it in (lord forbid) a major hospital intervention only to find you're not covered and a huge bill arrives.

As I said, if you go to the local INEM to register for Job Seeker (demandante de empleo), whilst you're there they will be able to answer questions like SS cover periods post leaving work and stopping contributions.
