News about wine and temperature changes in Spain

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090705...20090705055705

Note this particularly worrying sentence from the article
The country, already the driest in Europe, is threatened with "Africanisation" of its climate and up to one third of its territory risks "severe" desertification, according to the environment ministry.

""Spanish vintners must choose between an early harvest that produces wine with the right amount of alcohol but is still "green" or a later one in which the grapes produce a better quality wine but have more alcohol.

"The wineries prefer to wait... So much that the wines produced today are often are 14, 15 or even 16 percent of alcohol compared to 12 previously," said Cacho""

So who is worried?

Looking at those figures we should be celebrating!......

To be more serious, maybe people thinking of buying property, especially out in the sticks for the long term should consider the above.
The countryside is changing fast in some areas, water could be in short supply or very expensive if available.
It will be much less attractive as the greener plants struggle or die out.
In desert like conditions constant drifting fine dust and sand is very unpleasant and a nuisance.
Land stability could also be affected and property values could take a tumble.
I have travelled quite a bit in parts of Almeria for example and seen tumbledown, unstable and deserted villages, in now desert like areas which at one time probably grew enough produce for the inhabitants to survive.
I doubt if its very wise to buy property for the long term in such border-line desert regions.

The water situation in Spain is indeed dire, not helped by golf -mania which leads to desertification in surrounding areas, which leads to not nice countryside or water conditions, which leads to tourists going home which leaves the locals to deal with the resulting drought...

mmmmm just 10 minutes ago I was having a coffee with a colleague and we were talking about our utility bills (boring I know!!!) and we both said how cheap our water was .... BUT it shouldnt be !!! Because its so cheap I dont think many people think about how much these use - so its probably counter productive for the powers that be to keep it so low . I would have thought by increasing the charges it would help to conserve supplies and to use some of the money investing in more desalination plants or something ... or am I being niaive here ??? I may get my legs slapped for advocating increased charges for anything at the moment ... but sometimes it has to be done otherwise we will all suffer in the long term.

I don't know if our water's cheap or expensive, but i did think it had gone up about a year ago; perhaps just in this area. I don't think the price makes a lot of difference to how people use it unfortunately. Look at the price of cigarettes and how many people smoke, but I agree water should be more expensive. I think a good constant campaign about water usage may help, but not the one week of ads on the telly that they usually do in Spain
