Default Hi ... yet another newcomer

Hi,

my name is Sebastian and I'm reading these forums for months now, I really learnt a lot and had quite a bit of fun reading all your posts - even so much that I'm seriously thinking about starting a donkey farm

Anyway, me and my fiancee (plus cat and dog) are moving to spain mid april (23 days!!!!!!). My family has a house in Benissa (Costa Blanca) since the 70s. It was mostly used for occasional holidays by my grandparents in the past, but now we have the opportunity to live in it. Personally I've just been in spain a couple of times plus one reconnaissance tour in february this year. Our jobs enable us to work from home over the internet, so the economical crisis doesnt scare us that much plus the lower living costs compared to the UK are a blessing

We're not burning our bridges in the UK just yet (wink JoJo). We're giving Spain a serious go though and if we're still happy after a year or so I'm sure we will stay for a long long time. I can't wait to improve my spanish, I started learning it a while back but here in the UK there is not enough motivation to start through with it.
So we're looking forward to a whole new life style, personally I can't wait to have a go at gardening and growing my own fruit and vege (luckily our house has quite a big plot of land around it compared to most other houses in our area).

Has anyone got some tips for the area around Benissa/Montemar? I'm quite interested in a good Hipermercado (in february we had a look at Carrefour in Finestrat, but that's quite a drive, maybe there is one closer by?) and DIY store close by. Especially the DIY store is of interest, cause I'll have quite a bit of improvements in house and garden on my list that need doing. If not covered by DIY stores a dedicated garden center would be great as well, so I can get started with my little vegetable farm

Ok talked enough for now - I hope that I will be able to take part more actively on this board, cause I think it's one of the most interesting spanish expat forums on the net.

Hello, good evening and welcome....Seb.
Don't know much about the area you will be living so can't help you there.
I, too, work on the internet. Bril isn't it that you can take your job anywhere in the world with you.
I hope you enjoy your stay in sunny Spain and good luck.

Hi Seb and welcome!

Not near your area, but check out sites for DIY places such as Leroy Merlin which could be around that area or AKI, which has pretty reasonable prices. Word of warning on the garden centres - they can be extortionate. It would be worth speaking to perhaps a neighbour who also grows veggies as there are generally little places that sell seedlings, etc much much cheaper than the stores. And if you get on well with the neighbours, they're usually good at giving you cuttings too! The ferias/markets are also really good for this.

Donkeys though?! Have you not seen the videos Xtreme's just posted??!
