Thanks for all your valid and reasoned comments. I understand that some of you may be erring on the side of caution as a direct result of the financial crisis. Fortunately, we don't have that worry (very wealthy - enough to support all our children into adulthood and beyond should they choose to rest on their laurels for a living).

What does concern us however is the social aspect in respect of our children; and the points some of you have made are very welcomed and will assist in our decision making. Thanks again. Kind regards

I guess if she is never going to have to support herself then it can't do her any harm then

Jávea IS a great place to live - that's why I live here

All the money in the world isnt going to give her friends or a nice social life tho. money, whether an issue or not, doesnt give a happy life!! Money wasnt the reason we left Spain, we left for the childrens self worth, fulfilment and independence. Why not split and live during the term in the UK and the holidays in Spain or vice versa??? We're in the process of doing just that and are renting in Spain for the whole of the summer holidays and then again during the winter. that way everyone gets the best of both worlds

I agree totally

that's the case everywhere - money might buy friends for a short while but are they real friends?

and it will be so much harder here without the language or contacts

you know my situation - life would probably be financially easier for me right now if we DID return to the UK

but I have two girls who have been brought up in Spain & this is their home, this is where their friends are & everything they have grown up with

yes they speak English so a transition to the UK wouldn't be as hard for them as for a 16 year old coming here with no Spanish - but it would be hard, so I won't inflict that change on them

Great that she will have financial backing come what may. I'm a little surprised that it wasn't mentioned before! That also rules out a lot of what people were saying about uprooting here at a time when her education would suffer as she'll be able to go into private education where there will hopefully be people around her who speak good English.
It could still be a rough ride for her though. On a personal note my daughter would have been devastated if I'd asked her to change school, friends and country at 16. That's not to say she wouldn't have got a lot out of the experience, possibly. Still, it's up to you - or maybe her!

I would try to get your 16 year old to go to university in Scotland and then have her move over after she's finished. I've gotten the impression that in southern Europe people put a lot of value on British/Scottish education.

When I told a Spaniard that I study in Scotland he assumed St. Andrews right away.
