Post Register with local town hall

I understand it would be in our best interest to register with our local town hall, but do i need an NIE number or will my passport be sufficient, until I get my NIE .

Can anybody help with this question

It's my understanding that you can not be on the 'padron' without an NIE.

That is; get NIE first, then sign on the padron.

it may well vary from town to town - worth trying with your passport, but as a resident of Spain you need to register as such at the 'foreigners office' in any case & they will usually issue a NIE at that time

it's not a case of it being 'in your best interest' though, it's a requirement that all residents register on the padrón

you are resident?

It does vary from town to town. The main thing is to have proof that you live there - deeds, rental agreement etc. A passport might suffice if you don't have an NIE.

There are benefits to registering, as in some places it entitles you to services like libraries and cheap fares. But the main point is that the town will get money from the government based on the number of registered inhabitants, so you benefit from making your town a little bit better off.

yes of course in some cases there are direct benefits - & yes the town benefits from you registering

my point really was that you should register - indeed are required to register - even if there are no direct benefits to you

I think it's also worth mentioning that you should not register on the padrón if you aren't resident in Spain

Yes I thought the council would benefit, At the moment it seems such a nightmare to get the NIE. I read somewhere that various documents might do.

Thank you for your reply

Getting an NIE is easy and will make your life easier too - just go to your local foreigners office and make an appointment. In fact its easier than signing on the padron!

it really isn't hard to get the NIE/resident cert

you can download the form from our useful links 'sticky'

for the resident registration/NIE you use the EX18, for non-resident NIE the EX15

there's also a link there to 'where to apply'

different offices will have slightly different systems, regarding appts. & so on, so contact them first

Thanks for the reply. I heard that I have to be at the office for 5 am in the morning as they give out tickets up to 60. Then wait your turn. I have to drive for 2 hours to get there, plus find somewhere to park. My nearest is Zargoza. There is a nearer one in Lleida but I am not in that catchment area so have to go to Zargoza.

I got the forms filled them in then found they were out of date so had to start again.

Will have to keep trying.
