Default So this is where the tourists went

Dissapointing for the Egyptian tourist industry, other countries are reporting near 100% occupancy rates over the Easter holiday:

"Spain is enjoying the offshoot of the uprisings in Arab countries such as Tunisia and Egypt, which have diverted tourists and helped fuel recovery in the Spanish industry. The main beneficiary of this has been the Canary Islands where overseas demand has been strong at the start of this year. Coastal areas have reported occupancy rates of close to 100 percent over Easter and the forecasts of the hotel sector have improved for the first time in three years"

My daughter rents out a Casita in Spain and she is fully booked for July and August plus almost for June.
Bookings always come but she has never been fully booked this early on in the season.

I think this year is already a complete write off for the Egyptian economy, what with both parliamentary and presidential elections to take place in 2011. Plus, if anybody was not put off by the scorching summer months, Ramadan falls in August, so everything shut for most of the day or with changed opening hours, very off putting for the average tourist. I am definitely not staying here to watch people sleep and fast

I went to Lanzarote in February - flights were hideously expensive due to the high demand and all the tourists I met said that they would normally go to Egypt but political issues and sharks had put them off.....

And this wont help the tourist industry one bit.

Leading Brotherhood members have called for Egypt to come under Islamic law similar to that in Saudi Arabia. The appeal came during interviews as well as rallies by the Brotherhood just months after the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak in February.
"The implementation of the Islamic Sharia punishments comes after taking over the territory," Brotherhood deputy general guide Mahmoud Izzat said. "The punishments have to be implemented after Islam enters the lives, ethics, and dealings of the people."

The political issues are not going to clear up any day soon.

What sharks where they talking about? The ones in the water or the ones walking the streets? I had friends down in Sharm in Feb and they call the place Sharm el Shark as they say.. they are all sharks there ready to bite your hand off the minute it comes out of your pocket and that attitude to tourists doesnt help either.
