Default Question : Do you stop at red traffic lights in South Africa ?

If you live in S.A you may answer please. Do you and most people pass through red traffic lights in South Africa ?

If so as a poster here claims you do, doesn't that mean you have to stop at green ones ?

(lol))

First let me give my answer.

I am South African and drive our roads every single day. I frequently am asked by a traffic light to come to a stop which I am every other observable car obey because it's quite a good mutual system to stop us from killing each other in high speed collisions. So while I find this a tedious endevour I see no reason not to do it. In fact an entire industry of road side selling and pamplet handing out exists at traffic lights because of this very real and predictable "stopping " phenomenon. I therefore suggest anyone who claims South African don't engage in this "Stopping" is probably a notrious fibber or uninformed (to be polite).

I think you accept opinions more often that are negative about South Africa. It's called a confirmation bias.

But hey...that's just my opinion.

I accept opinions that are delivered in the correct fashion without insults against those who disagree. As for SA, I dont know how many times I've said I have no idea - I've never been, nor am I likely to. However, I've heard much more bad than good - as most people who havent been there - the world media. Now who does one believe??? someone who is rude and offensive to everyone who disagrees and creates an image by what they say of living in a violent community or the media, who are possibly bias and want the rest of the world to think that SA is violent (a hidden agenda????) ..... oh, and my friend who lived there for 5 years and found it oppressive and violent??? - I dont know, nor do I care. I just make sure that forum rules are adhered to and in this case, try to teach those who dont understand democracy, how its done

And who exactly decides what is the correct manner ? That type of thinking leads to fascism.

This is exactly the point of the other thread that you closed down. It's overstated by the media. That's the entire premise of our argument. I gave a lot of examples of things that people claimed that are just not true. We do stop at stop streets, ladies walk openly wth their hangbags, we don't sleep with guns under our pillows etc. If any of those things were true I would leave the country straight away and I doubt 20k Brits would move here each year. They are absurd things for anyone to claim and this is the point. Crime here ius way overstated.

Oh I bet your friend colours in many of her stories to appear more interesting and exotic. Examples of things your friend claimed that are patanently absurd "People don't stop at red traffic lights." Here the news: They do. So what does that make your friend who claimed something ...let's call it...false.

Hint : Starts with L.

Sadly the terrible irony is the type of people who invent this mythology are nostalgic for the lack of democracy in South Africa.

The forum owner has rules that decide the correct manner - its not fascism, its the opposite and the rules can be read at the top of the forum. These rules prevent people coming onto the forum using multiple names, insulting others who dont agree with them and who dont have any concept of how to "win friends and influence people" Just remember, your views are not the right ones and may not be shared by everyone, they're yours!

Jo

Sadly, in reality it is true from other South Africans I have spoken to that at night they drive over red lights if it is safe to do so.

That's because, despite contrary comments, many people HAVE been mugged whilst stopped at lights at night. The view therefore is that, especially if you are alone, it is safer to run the lights than sit at them and make yourself a target.

It's much the same as many things in SA, people seem to adapt.

I have a SA friend in the UK that, when going into a restaurant or Cafe, will always do to a table at the back of the room, and site with her back to the wall. Its a habit. She needs to see whats going on.

Her mother, when she comes over from Pretoria to stay, is panic stricken because here daughter doesnt have a guard dog, or metal bars at her windows.
