Dubai retracts bid for 2020 Olympics, UAE More Sport - Maktoob News

Quote:
Dubai has cancelled plans to bid for the 2020 Olympic Games, saying it has set its eyes on the 2024 games instead, an Emirati government statement said on Friday.
Erm, unless they plan to host the Summer Games during the Winter I just don't see how this is doable

Anyway, leaving the temperature concerns aside, do you think that in 14 years Dubai would be ready to host the Olympic Games?

It depends if Abu Dhabi is still willing to pick up the tab then!

I think the only thing that would prevent it is being able to afford it and the temperature.

A lot of the events are indoor so wouldn't be a problem, but the track and field events would be a non-starter.

Also, there would be an issue of athletes drinking water, etc, during Ramadan I would presume!

I can't see Abu Dhabi contributing the funds for something that would take the limelight away from them, if they were going to pay for it, they'd want to host it although I guess they're close enough that they could share events?

I reckon the infrastructure for the airport and hotels is more or less already in place though.

In 13 years time, Ramadan wouldnt be in summer, it would be sometime in March/April.

I think the biggest issue, will be, as other poster said, availability of funds

1. Ramadan shouldn't be an issue as Tropicana stated that it would move and be much earlier in the year (March 11 to be exact).
2. Outdoor events shouldn't be an issue as they can implement cooling systems like Qatar plans to do for the World Cup. I think they are looking at technologies that can reduce the temperature 20 degrees Celsius (I will believe it when I see it).
3. It is usually typical for a city to turn a profit by hosting the games. I am sure the other Emirates will try to get in on this actions and piece of the pie. With the costs incurred you will see huge changes in infrastructure for existing residents but also the long term benefit will surely exceed the immediate costs.

I hope they are considered to get it.... but I would rather see it go elsewhere... like Morocco or Copenhagen.

I did say 'typical.'

Not every location will make money, but I don't see how Dubai can't since much of the infrastructure is in place already.... building a few more stadiums shouldn't be an issue. Also, I don't foresee them spending the amount of money as the Chinese did showcasing the beginning and ending ceremonies.... (those have by far been the best I have seen).

Maybe they decided to hang on the extra 4 years in the hope that the National sport of "Doing no work, drinking coffee and texting while being employed by a Govt body" gets included.

If it's possible to build malls the size of 50 football fields, it's possible to make an indoor stadium. Dubai would put a temperature controlled dome around the city if they could.

Beijing was really hot during their olympics too. The reported temperature was only in the 30's, but the pollution made it significantly more. It felt more like 40.

Hosting games are usually profitable, but it takes a huge initial investment. They'll probably have a tough time acquiring the funds because of Dubai's not-so-good reputation with debt right now. Maybe they'll convince Abu Dhabi to lend it in return for profits. Heh.

Dubai will be ready - infrastructure is the key component. In addition, the local staff that manage the sporting events here have proven to be decent. They just need a bit of big-game management expertise.

As for the "heat", there is precedent for having the "summer games" not during the traditional "northern hemisphere summer".
