Default ESL in SE Asia

I was looking for an ESL job in Thailand, but thought I should consider some of the other SE Asia countries. Does anybody know what the situation is in any of them. There are rarely any jobs on Dave's ESL Cafe, so I'm looking for information elsewhere.

Vietnam is a popular destination, but again, they don't do mostly on site hiring. I've never confirmed this, but I was told that they don't require a work visa for contracts less than three months. They get a lot of backpackers working for just a short period. It used to pay exceptionally well, but I don't think that is true anymore. It's also possible to work in Laos and Cambodia.

Do you know anything about age discrimination in these countries?

Japan is pretty bad. I think some of the other countries prefer younger teachers, but have to take what they can get. Some, as a poster in the Japan forum pointed out, prefer older women for teaching the very young.

Some other countries in SE Asia, like Cambodia, only interview and/or hire with face-to-face meetings. This is perhaps why it is more difficult to find ESL jobs in other locations on the web. Thailand is a very good place to start with ESL as Bangkok is considered the gateway to SE Asia. Once set up with a position there, you can easily find out about job fairs from other ESL teachers, allowing you to travel to other SE Asian countries for interviews. etc.
