After saying for ages that my next trip was going to be back to Mexico to check out retirement possibilities, I've decided to go back to Central America for a few months. A friend is going to Costa Rica, so I'm going to travel with her for a couple of weeks, maybe go up to Nicaragua for a bit, then spend some serious time in Panama checking things out in person.

My mother used to tell me, "Sometimes you have to just take a deep breath and do it." None of my travels have been as difficult as moving to Boston at 21, right after I finished my bachelor's degree. After a while you just figure out that you can probably cope with anything, somehow.

How many countries in the world have you visited? When I have finished my office I am putting a world map up with pins in all the places we've been.

You don't work for the UN do you

No, and I was 25 before I ever left the US. I've been to about sixty countries, and worked in two others besides the US. But I'm 62, so I've had some time to rack up some travel.

My Spanish is pretty minimal, but I manage to get by. I spent over a month in Panama about four years ago, and I thought English was much more prevalent than in, say, Honduras or Nicaragua. Right now I"m in Nicaragua. I got a little sidetracked!

LOL depends where you stayed in Panama. Actually living there is different, there was a very small expat community when we were there. So hardly anybody spoke English in the taxis or supermarkets and out on the streets. I loved it though was the best way to learn Spanish
