Default Passport Question

My wife is Venezuelan and holds a Full European passport, as she is a naturalised UK citizen, as she has been married to me for 18 yrs. Am I correct in thinking that she can enter and leave Venezuela, as a tourist(without any problems). She also holds a Venezuelan passport, but I keep telling her SHE DOES NOT NEED IT to travel in & out.

you can travel in & out on your passport can't you?

then so can she - you're correct she doesn't need it to visit as a tourist

are there perhaps any other advantages to keeping the Venezuelan one - for instance, if she/you both ever decided to reside there?

She's British...she has the same rights as any other Brit!!
She probably doesn't need to take her Venezuelan one with her.

I would check the laws in Venezuela before advising her to leave her Venezuelan passport at home. There are a few countries in the world that require its citizens to enter the country only on their "home" passport.

The US is the main one, but it's entirely possible there are other countries with similar laws.

Where folks sometimes get tripped up with this for the US is if the immigration official on entry notices that the person was born in the US. (Admittedly, the US laws on citizenship are a bit "unique" so that any one born in the US is considered a citizen, even if they don't themselves.)

The other caveat with traveling on only one passport is that most consulates insist that they can't help their own nationals if they run into trouble in the country where they have their "other" nationality. So, if she gets into trouble in Venezuela, technically the British Consulate is not supposed to interfere. (Similarly, in Britain, she may not be able to appeal to the Venezuelan Consulate because of her British nationality.)
Cheers,
Bev

im unsure of the venezuelan laws but i do know that on my dual (us/uk) it makes it easier for me to enter each country with that countries passport as the "citizen" queue is always smaller than the foreigner one lol

I always travel with both passports. When entering the US, I must use my US passport. When entering the EU, I need my EU passport or else they demand to see visas. Venezuela may be similar to the US.
