Default Canadian moving to Austria

I am looking to move from Canada to Austria for my boyfriend, a native Austrian. I understand that immigration to Austria is very difficult, especially considering I am not a EU citizen. I do have one potential advantage, however - my father was born in Scotland and remains a UK citizen. I am wondering if I should try for an Austria work visa or try for my UK citizenship through my father and get in that way.

Also, any ideas for potential jobs? My BF tells me English teachers are a dime a dozen here but without knowing German, I'm not sure what else I'm qualified for! Any advice would be fantastic.

We are trying to avoid getting married for me to move, if possible.

1st Question where are you going in Austria?

If Vienna is your destination there is a govt funded office in the Rathaus to help expats with issues. If you are out in the other places in Austria, you are pretty much on your own.

Now for permits/visas, get them on the Canadian side of the pond. MA 35 is on Dressdenerstrasse in Wien. This where you will get residency and work permits. They are pretty much unhelpful there to everyone.

Now for further info Google

Virtual Vienna

these forums will have pretty much the answers to most questions.

As for UK citizenship you can get a work permit in Austria. As for English speaking jobs look to the UN, IAEA, or a Multinational. However you will need residency and work permits to apply.

As there already seems to be a thread for Austria, I think I can post my questions here as well.

So, I would like to ask about applying for a job in Austria. If you are leaving an open application, what documents are you expected to add? In Finland, you only send your cover letter and CV, and you are supposed to take your diplomas and references to the job interview. What if all your references are in Finnish? Hiring a professional translator would cost a fortune... And is a photograph in CV mandatory?

Last but not least: is it possible to find a job in Austria if your German skills are decent and you have a Master's degree, but not in the fields of IT, financing, or engineering?
