Default Retiring in the Philippines

Hi everyone
I am a 55 year old Australian who is planning on retiring in the Philippines early next year.
I have been to Bali several times but never the Phils. I'll have an imcome of around $1000US per month. This amount would be fine for Bali, how would it go in the Phils? How do they compare?
I am holidaying in Borocay in Jan and would like to make some contacts.

It all depends on your standard of living. You can certainly live in Indonesia, the PI, Cambodia, or Thailand with $1000 a month but you will need to watch your money as there's not much left over for frills.

I'll be more specific. In the smaller cities outside Manilla, how easy is it to rent a 2-3 bedroom villa or unit for 6k-8k php per month which is Not on top of a Sewerage treatment plant, or in the middle of a busy highway. Sales information seems to indicate that nice units are available in this price range everywhere, but I'm not sure that they are.
In Bali, meals are readily available at $2-3 (you can spend a lot more if you wish)
Is this the same in PI or would you need to spend a lot more to avoid some serious gastro.

I checked in Cebu and the decent apartments were running between 12,000-16,000 peso.

Meals for $2-3 are no problem.

Thanks Drrey
I'll take you up on that. I'll be travelling around PI for a week straight after Boracay. I'll touch base a little closer to the time.

Ah, Boracay. I had to walk to the other end of the island one day, to change my flight. It took me about six hours. I wore my bathing suit under a dress, and every time I got hot I went in for a quick dip. I stopped for a snack, for some ice cream, for some pita and hummus, a long chat with a Filipina that used to live in the US and Germany. My actual transaction took only about ten minutes...it was an absolutely lovely day. Maybe I should go back...

That is fine for living in the Philippines. You can rent a basic place for $120/mth in Lipa City, or $400/mth in Manila. Beers $1 each. Eat out for $4-8. Cheaper food in the countryside if you buy from dry/wet markets. eg. I saw nice green beans for $0.50/kilogram. Watch the parasites, and I don't mean the bugs, but rather the buggers. Find a nice girl to take care of you, not bar girls. Find one you dont need to pay off.

Also if you intend to stay I recommend buying foreclosed property. See http://foreclosured.blogspot.com/.
