It wont be before Nov-Dec that banana prices normalise...bananas are an annual crop, and the next crop wont start trickling into markets before november at the earliest...

In Southern Melbourne Market, it was 9.99/kg. I'm told that prahan market is cheaper.
Luckily I hate bananas, so doesn't really affect me

Surly with prices sky high over the last few months, not nearly as many people have been buying bananas. I know I haven't been...so what happens to all the ripe/over-ripe bananas? Don't they have cheap bags of over-ripe bananas for sale? Or do they chuck them all away?

There were these fat-reduced, banana flavored, muesli bars I liked a lot when I visited. Maybe they used it for that? There are many other uses as well:

1. Organic juice shops sell banana shakes.
2. Restaurants serve banana split ice creams.
3. And I know my dear sister uses them for a beauty mask sometimes. Not sure if people in Australia do the same, but it IS a possibility.
4. And finally, when the US government wanted to give relief to food growers, it bought about 24 million dollars worth of produce for food support programs. Maybe the OZ government did the same thing???

Of course, I can only conjecture though. It's the 'pure blooded, born and bred' Aussies who can really tell us what they like to do with their bananas

There doesnt seem to be a lot of wastage...bananas are in severely short supply, and the current level of pricing reflects that...

Pricing should start normalising from october-november onwards when some of the new crop starts coming through...

Sometimes there are vendors at markets who do mark them down, but the supermarkets seem to be running fairly marginal supplies and I haven't seen discounts on bananas since March at least...

Juice bars have added "banana surcharge" on to many items...they do remain major consumers of bananas though

Australia does not have massive farm subsidies like the USA does...quite a lot of farmed produce is exported, but there is no nonsense like sugar or corn subsidies...
