Seems like I read an article somewhere not long ago where Smart/PLDT is supposed to upgrade their service somehow before long. Don't remember what type of change or upgrade exactly, but will be interesting to see if it ups the speed a bit...

Wow, I would be happy with what you guys are getting. I have smartbro and living in a small town 2 hours from a major city. I have a quick response of maybe 2 minutes and I am happy. I have been trying for 4 days to send an email to my son overseas and I still can't get on hotmail. I even tried my yahoo mail, same thing. I will have to go into a city to send an email. forget about downloading. After 2 to 3 minutes, I lose the download. Most downloads have a time estimate of hours!!! So, I'll be glad when technology gets around the country. When I first came to the Philippines to visit in 1998 many of the areas here did not have electric. Now there is electric, so I now have to wait for internet to catch up.

Billy, are you using the USB plug in thing for Smart internet? I'm using Smart but the wireless type with the antenna on the roof. It should be available most everywhere and although not great, it is much better than what you are describing.

Typically those dishes are Ku band and are very weak in power output along with a small aperture antenna (low gain).

Just my 2cents..

Yea I forgot about that happening. I remember when living in Nebraska it happened using satellite TV when thunder clouds were in the area or when snow filled up the dish. Dunknow then as the local services at least in our location are worse than bad...

I read all your comments and wish I could have a fast internet service like you guys. I am in the middle of nowhere and my smartbro is terrible. It once took me 8 hours to send an email to my son using hotmail. The service was that slow and sometimes kept disconnecting. I finally went to a larger town with DSL. HELP does anyone know of a service via USB and no wires that can be used in the middle of nowhere?

Billy,

There is a USB (thumb drive type) modem called Globe Tattoo. It operates off Globe cell towers. It costs similar to SmartBro. You will obviously need Globe coverage in your area. If the Globe network is stronger you may get better reliability...

Globe has a new unlimited 999 pesos per month post paid 2 year plan.
unlimited time, unlimited downloads
you get a gadget that creates a wifi hotspot that can connect 5 devices.
you have to buy the gadget, I think about 10k
recently spoke to an aussie in boracay who has it and swears by it.
it would be suitable for a home wifi system.
he hasn't got the gadget. just has it on his phone which is the wifi hotspot for 4 other devices.
I connected my ipad to it and it worked well.

I have DSL with a land line from PLDT. It's not the fastest one they have, only 1 mps but good enough for me. The package costs 1700 for both. I need the land line because cell signals here in my subdivision in Tagaytay are terrible. And I need a secure connection to do on line banking. Also, it's necessary for my Magic Jack.( I love that thing!)

The philippines is on my list of countries im considering moving to for the next 2-5 years of my life.

Since my business is all online/remote, my number 1 concern is internet connection, in fact, available speeds will probably determine where I choose to live.

If cost is no object for internet connection, what city in the philippines has the absolute best/fastest connection?

I am more interested in speed over reliability, since it seems reliability is not really gonna happen anyways, haha.

I assume there are high-end luxury condos and other western/modernized buildings that cater to the wealthy that require high speeds right?
