The matter to consider is not whether you can stay or not. It is whether you can keep and own the land you invested with your spouse. For sentimental or other reasons, some people may not want to relinquish ownership. This is a personal decision. One needs to consider whether becoming a Philippine citizen is worth keeping the land one invested in or not. I can't tell any individual what is best for them, but based on my own logic I can make a recommendation. Or one may consider whether they may want to expand their real estate holdings to start a business. As a foreigner these options are severely limited.

I had thought about doing that at the onset but then found no useful reason for doing so.
Could you perhaps quote me a source for your suspicion. I searched, but could not find anything saying the U.S. government would become involved at all.

There is not a source that I can accurately quote. If you are in the Philippines a visit with US councilor services at the embassy would be in order. If still in the states then would suggest visiting with the US Department of state. Either place should be able to give an answer to questions of this nature as it would be wrong of me to speculate further without solid information.
