Default Eye specialists in Manila area

Hello everyone,

Hope someone can help. My company runs a charity and one of the cases we are dealing with at the moment involves a woman who moved to Dubai to work to be able to support her family back home (as many women from Philippines do). However she has almost lost he eye sight due to Diabetes related complications and is unable to continue working, at least until she gets an eye surgery to stop the progression of the disease. She has seen a doctor here in Dubai, however the surgery she requires (Vitrectomy) is complicated and she’ll need help and care afterwards, therefore we’ll be repatriating her back to the Philippines, where hopefully she’ll be able to get the surgery done as soon as possible and be looked after by her family.

Now the next step is to find the right doctor in Philipiness. Can anyone advise please of a good ophthalmologist in the Manila area, particularly someone who can perform a Vitrectomy or specialses on eye complications related to Diabetes.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Also,

Just found your post. We live two hours north of Manila so don't have a lot of info. However, Manila is THE place for her to have any surgery. Other areas are no good at all.

I would suggest contacting Dr. Eugenio Cu. at Manila Doctors Hospital Clinc in Ermita, Manila. He is an exceptional internal medicine doctor. He would be the best I think to give either you or she a reference to the best ophthalmologist available. Here is a link with contact info for that hospital:
Manila Doctors Hospital - Services - Other Support Units - Admitting, Information and Telephone Services

I dont know how well you know this person, but if you or someone else is not with her, she may not use the money provided to have the surgery.
Often times here, due to the poverty, fear, and even other family members wanting help, a local will use extremely bad judgment when cash is available.
Best option is to have someone come with her and manage the finances.

Hope that helps a little,

Gene...

Hi Gene,

Thanks for the info and for sticking this one.

Yes, we are aware that sometimes cash ends up being misused even in cases like this, however the charity has been running for many years now so they are pretty good at screening the candidates, and besides some small amounts for very urgent expenses, she has not been handed out cash as we take care of the bills directly or request pro bono work or contributions to other institutions.

In this case we have a copy of her medical records and we're in close contact with the specialist who treated her here in Dubai, so there's no doubt this is an authentic and very urgent case, and we're glad we're able to help. Hopefully she'll be in a flight to Manila early next week to reunite with her kids after 3 years and see them again before is too late, as the chances of reversing the damage her eyes have suffered are minimal. At this stage we are just hoping we can arrange the operation for her so she won't lose the minimal eyesight she's got left.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Izzy

Another suggestion if i may - go thru the local Rotary Club or Lions Clubs - they do charity work as well and will know the relevant doctors

It would be better if she can visit American Eye Institute, which is located at Shangrila mall in Ortigas Center, Pasig City. They have the best eye doctors there. Just google it for their contact details.
