Post Safest place in the Philippines?

G'day!

I am struggling to live here in Bubbleland Australia, therefore I am looking at all my options...I only need internet as I work online.

I don't need bar girls, I don't need attractions, as long as there is internet and a big supermarket, that's all I need, but after reading a few threads...I can't help but I am worried so...how about Palawan? Negros? Anywhere...just the safest spot where to park myself.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum. No need to isolate yourself unless it's your preference. Plenty to do and places to enjoy here. Yep, good thing to leave the bar girls in the bars as there are too many dangers and problems as a result of messing with them.

Internet can at times be a problem in reliability but it's something one adjusts to.
For good living, I personally would recommend the Subic Bay area. Very modern by local standards and many good stores and restaurants on the old base there.

How many times have you visited the Philippines? If never or for only very short trips, be sure to spend as much time here as possible before committing to making a move.

Good luck,

Gene

When you get a few minutes, check out jon1's posts about living on Subic Bay (SBMA).
He goes into great detail about renting houses, electricity, driving, traffic, schools, etc.

Well worth your time.

Kinda depends on how "safe" you want to be and what your definition of "safe" is. Lots of good places if you don't make yourself a target, keep your wits about you, and pay attention to your surroundings at all times. We are all different and think somewhat differently, but yet all the same too. You have to do the experience for yourself.

There are places 98% more dangerous in our home countries than here. The big thing is being aware of your surroundings and associates. I limit that to what I am comfortable with. There are always risks but if you never risk you are just a prisoner.

I measure my risks always and take more depending on the need (driving, riding a motorcycle, etc...).

The best ammo is knowledge. With that you can assess what is in your comfort level..

Well that's correct if your home country has a passion for weapons...but in Australia, especially in rural areas, even just a street fight is rare as you finding gold on a street.

Hi Gene, thanks for the welcome. I have never been in the Philippines yet.

I like rural areas but I absolutely need reliable fast internet for work.

Thanks

The gun culture in the US is a little overblown by all of you non-US citizens. The key thing is the right to own a weapon. There are regulations and for the most part is a good system. The right to own a weapon is the ONE thing that I miss about the states. I do like to go shooting and have on occasion here with some filipino friends.

The dangerous places I was referring to were in places that me (a white guy) just do not belong nor have business in being/driving thru (i.e. South LA, East St Louis, etc.). I have been thru these places and right away you know you are not where you need to be. I have not felt that level of uncomfortability in this country yet. However, I do know of places that I should not go here and won't (Basilan, Jolo, Cotabato, Tondo (in Manila), Port area of Manila, etc.). Every place/country has their bad spots (sometimes dependent upon the time of day). I have lived in rural America and it's equally as safe as to what you were saying about Australia.

The key thing as fmartin_gila aptly put it. "Lots of good places if you don't make yourself a target, keep your wits about you, and pay attention to your surroundings at all times." I am not saying you have to live with your head on a swivel but be aware of where you are about.

I spend a lot of time observing personal behavior here and see some interesting things and tell tale signs of when to get out of where I am. Body language usually speaks volumes.

Hi Gene,
You do a great job here helping incoming expats, I hope we can get a chance to meet in the near future. I got your message, from this reply I assume you are referring about staying in the former base itself in Subic. I was there last week, it rained every day for the 5 days I was there and I mean rain. But it did seem a nice place as we drove through to the airport. The place you mentioned at 15k is that in Subic or am I mistaken? regards

Hi and thanks for the kind words. It's fun at least trying to help on here.
Yes, I was talking about the base itself. It's on the expensive side but you get what you pay for. Olongapo outside the base is okay too but ya need to search out a good place. Also, Brgy. Barretto over by Blue Rock is a great place.
Yea it would be fun to meet when you get settled. Perhaps over at SM mall in at Clark Airbase.
Before I forget, in Subic (on base) electric power hardly ever goes out and if it does it would be a few minutes only as they have huge generators to power the entire base if needed. Another advatage is ON BASE ONLY- the water is always 100% safe to drink and that really helps and even saves the cost of always having to buy bottled water.

Take care and talk to ya soon.

Gene
