Geez!

That is incredible... and it'dosen't make a whole lot of sense since there are non ozone depleting refrigerants available now.

I've been in the HVAC trade for the past 15 years and I've watched these refrigerant changes take effect.

We generally don't repair refrigerators or window shakers not because of the cost of refrigerant (they use very little) but because of the cost of labor; my company bills out at US$102 per hour, and by the time you add up all the miscellaneous charges, the customer is at least 1/2 to 3/4 of the way to paying for new equipment anyway.

Yes refrigerant, especially R-22 is going way up in price for everyone because it's being phased out and is no longer being manufactured (as far as I know). I'm employed by a commercial/industrial service company and we have many customers that still have R-22 equipment in service with a typical charge of 25-75 US pounds. When they loose their refrigerant it can cost up to US$1900 to replace it, not counting the cost of the repair.

But I digress... Again, with the new non-ozone depleting refrigerants available world-wide, I don't get the OZ govt's logic behind wanting to prohibit using bigger residential equipment. I can only speculate that they may be looking at total energy savings also, by making you stick to window shakers.

Australia now has a carbon tax because OZ generates .000000005% of the Worlds carbon global warming gas?? and you have to pay GST on top of that.
As power is use to run A/C etc the tax applies hence the increase in costs.
meaning more will want to leave like the rest of the World population and find a place where there is commonsense.
The Feds had also give Schools kids $820 to do what they like and to help with the cost of the tax .

That carbon tax has been much discussed here but fortunately it's not politically feasible... yet. Wonder when China will implement it?

According to Wiki - not the most reliable source - no, we do not.

Given enough time, it will be here, i'm sure. Regardless of political beliefs or the perceived environmental benefits, I've never come across any government that dosen't like a new tax.
