Lightbulb How Safe Are We Here?

Angeles City

In our home countries there are almost countless crimes, including murders every day of the week. Yet when one of us ( a foreigner) is killed here in the Philippines we all sit up and take notice.
So, how safe are we here when compared to being in our home countries? Seems to me that it pays to stay away from anything where one must take or show sides in a cause or political issues.

Definitely taking a huge risk to get involved in any politics in this country. Not sure what sense that makes.

I for one will never get involved in politics or any business as both just attract unneeded hate, jealousy and potentially being taken out. They value life too cheaply here (someone can be taken out for as little as 5000p/bullet. I am sure the price is higher for a high profile person.

Yep and if not a danger to life, even supporting a political candidate (mayor etc) or attending a political rally is illegal as a foreigner and can result in being arrested and deported.

Smile Great Subject

My Filipino Wife, of 28 years, and I are about 5 years away from retiring. Up until recently the idea of spending 6 months each year in the PI was the plan. But then out of no where she told me she didn't want to live in the PI after all. This blew me away a bit but when I asked her why she was fearful for my safety. I have been to the PI a few times and am also form NY and felt until recently that you stay away from trouble and you won't find it. The PI is different obviously and as mentioned here you want to blend in as much as possible by not getting involved in risky ventures, relationships, etc. Also in the PI, I am assuming and would love validation, you need to take care of those around you or you won't be taken care of. All that being said her family is now all in the Antipolo area and I really liked the climate up there etc. Would that be a bad place to retire to? Would one of the provinces be better? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Gregg

Hi Gregg,

Your wife has your best interest at heart and for that you are a lucky man. She would undoubtedly have a few bad memories of living here and in some respects be over concerned a bit. You are right in the things you are saying and most likely would do just fine in living here. If possible, the two of you spend as much time here as possible before retirement and perhaps she may feel differently. The area you are looking at is close to Manila and should be an okay place to live. Taking care of those around you - I assume you mean financial help/support for her family. If so, I would suggest living a very good distance from any family and NOT support anyone. The financial aid and request for help from most family members will never stop unless they are too far away to get to your door. It's a fact and could be a large part of why she does not want to live here again. It's a big decision and one you will both have to be in agreement on for sure.

Best of luck,

Gene

A man has died in hospital after he was stabbed during a brawl in Parramatta.

Police and paramedics were called to Argyle Street about 2am (AEST) on Sunday, where they found a 22-year-old with a stab wound.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital for emergency surgery but died just before 7am.

Police believe the victim was stabbed during a fight with up to four other males.

Say no more????

There are bad places all over the world.. Your home country is never 100% safe and because you are from there you know where NOT to go or be... Only difference over here is knowing that and using some common sense...

Yer grog changes them in a hurry....then again you could get hit by a Jeepney with bald tyres and no brakes as you leave so all luck..see some Dutch man was bumped off BUT he was some civil rights pusher and had taken 1.2 M PH out of the bank, may as well had a sign saying shoot me i am rich,,, seems to me most of the shootings etc are drugs, pay back or robbing' s. They came for me they would end up cooking me a meal and leave some loot behind.
