Default Safety?

We've been over this before, but I want to remind you that all of America isn't as bad as some would think. I've personally lived in some of the worst areas all over the states but I've been to a lot of great ones too. It is true that Americans live in a gun culture and have since the beginning. There is no way that this can ever be stopped. There are just too many out there. But at least having one legally for defense is an option that we don't have here, spousal permits not withstanding. My home in America has 2 alarms and 2 crazy well armed people inside. Yes, we had bars on our windows when I was in L.A. but we have them here too. I don't go out partying with the locals here. I stay out of bars. I couldn't begin to understand local politics and am not interested. It is also true about the common dislike of foreigners. I must constantly remind myself not to be confrontational. As far as supporting in-laws is concerned, I wouldn't think of robbing them of the initiative to get their own, no matter how hard it is. I have seen too many Filipinos lose their desire to work so long as the milk is still flowing. Some people really can't find work, even back home, but a lot decide not to work. Let them stand on their own feet. Is it better to give a man food or the tools to get his own? As for me, I would rather live in a system that I know and that knows me where I can have a sporting chance at survival than to participate in any way with a culture that doesn't want me and that I can never be a real part of. Imagine rioting because your lean-to shack was demolished. Really!

Hey Mike,

Don't think I asked before--what part of LA did you live in? I was in N. Hollywood - Van Nuys and eventually moved out to Canyon Country. Didn't have bars on the window back then but bet there is now-Hahaha..

You are spot on! But for me (on the red marks), I prefer to stick to myself for the most part so they don't really have much opportunity to take me to the cleaners.. I am really done with the rat race back in the US.. Makes me sick to my stomach whenever I get there, seeing as how stupid things are getting. For me I feel like an outsider so being an outsider in another culture is even more easier.

Jon,

I use to have much the same feelings when I use to go back home to the states. Felt almost like crying on the flight from here to LA or SFO. Yet on the flights coming here I wanted to get out and push the plane so it would get here faster. Strange! Most of the local foods (that are healthy) I've adjusted to here and my wife is a great cook with local as well as American and even some Australian dishes.
Only thing I do truly miss is the trout fishing in the high mountains of Southern Utah. But over all, I like living here better and even after years of police service here in our area I still feel the same.

Gene

Gene,

I miss the fishing too (grew up in the midwest).

The US is all about convenience but when you analyze things it's all cheap.

For me am glad to be here in my own space.

Jon

Say no more????
I have lived in Mexico 7 years now. Five years ago the drug wars started. Over 50,000 dead. Two weeks ago my german neighbor and his mexican wife were murdered. Many expats have had enough and are leaving.
My son is a policeman in Buffalo, New York. Says it gets worse everyday, the violence and murders. Violence is all over the world. You have to pick your spots and then stay on your toes all the time.

Well this will be a tough call for me. i live in Utah, US currently. I found out that I'm on a Terrorist Watch List by taking a flight back to the east coast to see my grandchildren and being stopped at the airport before boarding my plane by the FBI, DHS and TSA. I'm a disabled veteran and told them that but that doesn't hold any weight anymore either. Food prices are rising like crazy here in Utah. Taxes are going up. From the gas prices I had to sell my 4X4 Chevy pickup that I was just using for leisure and fishing. Through Executive Order by the President you can be picked up and detained and have no rights just as the Ex Marine Vet (Brandon Raub) was just treated to along with they say thousands of other vets. By more of those same Executive Orders the US Government can now confiscate everything you have. Hmmm do I wanna sit in a hammock, have my feet in the sand and drink Red Bull by the beach???? Me thinks very much so!
