Default Devonport... The Most Expensive Place To Live In New Zealand

Just watched this awesome video on Devonport Wharf and wanted to share with you all.

Still cant escape the fact that Devonport (Auckland) is over 75% Europeans (mainly brits). Cant belive the property prices for what is no more than a wooden hut on a tiny bit of land!

Here is the video

Cool Video! I went to Devonport a few years ago and thought it was a lovely place, can't believe that there are over 75% of europeans that live there! They've made a good choice though!

Yes, it's another modern day NZ ghetto.

Try getting out of Devonport by road in the rush hour or peak holiday times and suddenty it doesn't seem that desirable. The suburb is pleasant enough but really isn't worth the cost, or the hassle, of living there. I prefer to live somewhere where my friends can find a parking space outside of my house.

I'm not sure where you have got your information from, but it would be great if you could give us some links or sources to back what you are saying.

Orakei which is across the harbour is known as the most expensive place to live in NZ.
"Orakei is home to some of Auckland's most expensive real estate. Paritai Drive in Orakei is generally regarded as the most expensive street in Auckland, and most probably New Zealand. House prices on this street start at $3m and range to $12m" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orakei

I'm not sure where you sourced your numbers on the cultural diversity of Devonport, but according to the last census(2006), the North Shore had a similar derversity to NZ as a whole.
"67.5 percent of people in North Shore City belong to the European ethnic group, compared with 67.6 percent for New Zealand as a whole" QuickStats About North Shore City - Statistics New Zealand

It would be interesting if you could tell us a bit more about your experiences in Devonport.

oh those wooden huts don't fall down in an earthquake.

LOL! My only gripe was the lack of insulation and heating in NZ houses. But a visit to the Auckland Homeshow this year shows how things are changing - last year half the window companies didn't know what 'Thermal Break' in double glazing was, and very few actually had it. This year, practically all of them could offer it (albeit we still got a 'what do you want Double Glazing for - Auckland's warm enough you don't need it' from one guy. Yeah Right!)

"Where to live in Auckland" are as bad as you at giving the source of there statistics. No source, no date, figures such as these are dynamic, a snap shot, the figures are point less with out a date.
The figures are obviously not from the latest cencus 2006, as it included another category "Kiwi/New Zealander"

It also contraindicates you, its says buyers select Devonport for the "... large sections." while you say "Cant belive the property prices for what is no more than a wooden hut on a tiny bit of land!"

Glad I could help.

You may be interested in QVs latest report.

Property values across New Zealand continue to gradually decline according to the QV residential property indices for September.

Values are now 5.3% below the market peak of late 2007. After dropping 9.6 percent from the peak to a low point in April 2009, property values recovered throughout the rest of 2009 and early 2010. Between September last year and March this year values increased 3.4 percent. Since March values have begun to ease back again, dropping 1.4 percent. As a result the change in the index over the past year is still positive at 2.0 percent, but the gap is continuing to close.

Devo seems to be slightly effected however I guess that's because its probably the best place to live in NZ!

Lol! Matter of opinion.... I personally find North Shore too busy and built up when compared to our corner of the world. 10 minutes away in Whitford and you wouldn't believe you were so close to Auckland.
