Smile Moving to Auckland from UK in August

Hi there, My hubby has just accepted a post in Auckland and we are moving out in August with our 26yr old daughter who is hoping to do a post grad teaching dip at Auck Uni.
We have a hotel for the first 2 weeks but then wonder what will be the best thing to do - Motel or rent?
We intend to buy ASAP as I want to ship out my dog & cat.
Can anyone recommend a company who transports animals?
Looking forward to hearing from anyone who has made the move.
Cheers

Question Reply

Considering, up to date, 60 people have viewed this thread, I am a little disappointed with the lack of response.
Is there a reason for this or am I in the wrong forum?

Hi Delempicka,

People may have viewed your post but they may not have the knowledge to respond since they may not have moved to NZ themselves since anyone can view a post.

I moved to Australia so I don't have any personal knowledge of moving to NZ so can only give you general answers.

If you want to buy a place quickly will you be looking as soon as you move out there? I don't know what the property market is like in Auckland but it may take a while to find somewhere so you may want to rent for a while. Are you looking for property before you go over? You may find something at Real Estate, Houses for Sale, Rentals, Commercial and Businesses for sale at Realestate.co.nz - Realestate.co.nz

Does your NZ visa allow you to buy property? Things are possibly different in Oz where permanent residency is needed to buy a property or special approval.

Regards,
Karen

Did you think of reading a current post already in the NZ thread? Or , perchance, going back to earlier posts from where you can garner information? You say your intended move is in August, many people are pre-occupied with making a living etc so please be patient,on a general consensus of one(me),i find this to be a forum of high integrity, contributed to,by a multitude of very helpfull and informative people from a considerable number of countries.
Could you please scratch my ear? ( Brit humour ?) Colin

Hi Dilempicka!

First of all good luck to you for your move

Second (A bit off topic I know, sorry...), it might be an idea to pitch this forum to Kiwis/all people who live in or intend to live in NZ as well as expats already there... What do you think? The englishforum.ch site for people in Switzerland does that and it works quite well.

If you're going to Auckland though, it would be a good idea to rent, I think. I lived there for 3-4 years and would recommend that you rent somewhere out of the city centre (unless you have a lot of money to throw around ) as it is mostly very expensive there. If you like it quiet and don't mind 45 mins or so on a train (express) you can live out as far as Pukekohe. (I would post a link to google maps to give an idea where that is, but I' m not allowed to yet). Otherwise top price areas are: City, remuera, ponsenby, Parnell, devonport, takapuna. Medium price areas e.g. in Greenlane bordering remuera, other suburbs relatively inland, but either bordering suburbs on the coast or close to the centre. Lower price areas: South Auckland (around Manukau) lowest being papakura, manurewa, West Auckland suburbs. A general rule of thumb is that the further south or west you go, the less prestige. Though out west on the coast is getting very expensive too.

Either way, good luck and all the best to you and your family.

FF

Hi, we used a company called par air to ship our dog out, I'll try and find their web address. I recommend using them or similar as the protocol for getting pets in is very strict. I think renting at first is a very good idea, it gives you time to settle in and evaluate the areas. Rushing into buying can be costly. The housing market is also slowing so I would advise a wait, you may get a better deal. I have found that if properties are advertising no pets, it's worth asking them if they would consider pets. If they think you will be good tenants they often reconsider. Some ask for an extra bond or that you have the carpets cleaned when you leave etc. 2 weeks in a hotel is also costly!!! Most tenancy agreements are for 3 months which would give you time to adjust a little and also have a good look around at properties etc. Good luck with your move.
